Getting Started – Brewing with Raspberry Pi

SD CARD Preperation: First, make sure your SD card is formatted. The easy method of doing this is from Windows startmenu, search for: diskpart This will give you a small cmd window where we can manually clean and format our SD card. Why not the old fashion way? Because SD cards that have been used before are really difficult to format to their full size using the traditional Windows format option. Why? -i have no idea.. 🙂 Read more…

Automated Fermenter

The less things we need to worry about, the more we can focus on what we really love; making recipes and brewing beer! Contents Step 1 – Preparing the Raspberry Pi Connecting cables to the Raspberry Pi Step 2 – Connecting the SSRs (directly to the refrigerator) Wiring Diagram (example) Step 2 – Connecting the SSRs (easy method) Step Read more…

Automated brewery

Recently, we have expanded and upgraded the brewery for larger batches and more effecient brewing. More equipment, requires additional controls. Initially, we were looking at building a traditional controller, using PID`s and switches. This would allow us to control the pumps and heaters. This is the most traditional method for brewery controllers, and there are a lot of clever guides on how to build this, both High-End and low budget versions. But with some creativity and Read more…

Brewery Controller (safety upgrade)

So we had a fire.. Quite shocking (in all aspects of the word). What had happen was the SSR for the boil element melted and caused a short. In short, lots of sparks, flames and smoke! Since the CraftBeerPi community has grown to become quite substantial, we thought we would share our experience on the CraftBeerPi User Group. This was both to show other users what happened, the root cause of the issue and possibly avoid more Read more…

Brewery upgrades – controller

After some time using the controller and the ever-growing community is getting larger, there are some “fine adjustments” being suggested to parts, wiring and usage. One of the biggest one have been regarding the DS18B20 temperature sensor. This sensor, used on both Raspberry Pi`s and Arduino`s is a  “1-wire” sensor and supports several sensors on one bus (GPIO4 in the Pi) The only other connections required is 3V and Ground. New information however suggests that Read more…

BrewSession: VSOP Vanilla Porter

Sunday was another brew day and the second time making a new recipe on the new brewery. One thing we are running into is the pre-heating of water challenge. We are using the HLT kettle to heat up the water before we start. But taking into account the “loss” at the bottom of all the kettles that are used, the total amount of water needed quickly gets up to the limit of the kettle. We Read more…
